Aren't You Going To Thank Me?

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

As parents we are always looking for those teachable moments; times when the opportunity to teach our children one of life's many lessons seems to fall in our laps. One such moment came for us as the family sat down one day at mealtime.

Most of the time our youngest will say the mealtime blessing but occasionally will ask that we all take a turn. So we go around the table, each of us expressing our thanks to the Lord for providing us with our food until it's time for our oldest son (an adolescent) to speak. After hearing the usual complaints, some half-hearted mumble comes out of his mouth.

Shortly after we begin eating, the oldest decides to make a sandwich for the youngest. After handing over the sandwich he barks, “Aren’t you going to thank me for making you a sandwich?”

My eyes opened wide. Looking directly at him I calmly said, “You’re demanding a ‘thank you’ for making someone else a sandwich but you refused to give thanks to God for providing you with your meal?”

Giving thanks to God is something we should do everyday without reservation. He deserves our praise first and foremost. He is our Creator, He loves us more than we could ever imagine, and He provides everything we need!

Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:19-20 (NIV).
